The #1 mistake you could be making when trying to emotionally heal.

Navigating through this amazing thing we call life can seem like a roller coaster at times.  Up’s and down’s, twists, and turns.  Trying to figure out what TO do and what NOT to do can be overwhelming.   But, part of the overwhelm is because you are making one huge mistake over and over again.  You are trying to figure it out on your own when you don’t have to.  It took me years to finally realize the secret weapon God gave to all his believers.  Prayer!  Yes, not praying can be the #1 mistake you could be making daily when trying to emotionally heal.

First, let’s define prayer!

I’ve heard many deep and spiritual answers regarding what prayer is.  But, this is my answer.  Prayer is a conversation with God.   You speak to God and He speaks to you.  He may give you guidance, instructions, hope, and peace during your conversations with him.

You’re making a huge mistake if you are not including prayer in all your decisions.  1 Thessalonians 5:17 says we should pray without ceasing.  Every step of the way, as you are navigating through your day, you should have a constant dialogue going on with your creator.  This isn’t just about getting on your knees to pray before you go to bed and when you wake up in the morning.   Prayer is ongoing.  You must consult with God regarding what his plan is for your day, week, month, year, and life so that your actions align with it.

Even Jesus prayed.  In Matthew 6, Jesus had to deal with the scribes and Pharisees that were giving him a hard time, healed the man with a withered hand, chose the 12 disciples and so much more.   In the middle of all of these acts, he stopped and prayed to God.  What did I get from that passage?

When you pray, God will:

  1. Bless you with patience to deal with hateful people that want to tear you down.
  2. Empower you to do his will and bless others.
  3. Give you clarity regarding who should be in your immediate circle of trusted friends.

Also, don’t be dismayed in thinking your prayers are not elegant enough.  I speak to God the same way I speak to everyone.  Matthew 6:7 says But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.  So don’t try to sound a certain way to impress people that are listening.  Your only purpose is to express yourself to God.  He isn’t judging your prayer and checking to verify how spiritual you sound.  He isn’t keeping a record of how many scriptures you eloquently recite while praying.  God’s desire is just that you speak to him and you listen when he speaks to you.

Why is prayer important?

During prayer, God can provide you with guidance, hope, comfort, and instructions to help you emotionally heal.  Here are my favorite scriptures that give you insight regarding why you should pray.  I encourage you to read these scriptures to enhance your understanding.

  • 1 John 5:14-15
  • Philippians 4:6
  • Colossians 4:2
  • Ephesians 1:18, 6:18
  • Jeremiah 29:12
  • Job 22:27
  • James 5:13
  • Mark 11:24
  • Matthew 26:41
  • Romans 12:12, 8:26
  • Psalm 145:18
  • Luke 18:1
  • 1 Timothy 2:8

The bottom line is, Please do not make the mistake of trying to navigate through this precious gift of life.  God has a plan for your life and who could be a better guide for you than your creator?  No one.   Give all of your burdens, heartache, confusion, and struggle of trying to figure everything out to God and allow him for guide you in every decision you make.

My prayer for you!

Heavenly Father, I thank you for my sister that is reading this right now.  I pray that you restore her faith in you.  Strengthen her prayer life.   Remind her that her concerns are important to you and you desire to hear all the petitions of her heart.  Give her peace in knowing and accepting your guidance through prayer.

In the name of Jesus, Amen
