Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat. etc., etc.! The perfect imaginary worlds that so many people live in. Some use social media to stay connected with family members that are far away. Some use it to reconnect with childhood friends. From networking to rekindling, to “hooking up”. Lots of stuff is happening on social media.
People LIVE to impress others on social media. They make up an imaginary Facebook life that is perfect. Their marriage is perfect, the children are perfect, the job is perfect, the bank account is perfect, EVERYTHING IS PERFECT.
My page tends to be more on the positive side because that is how I choose to view life. I make a choice to see my life as blessed. I highlight all the positive things that are going on and share my joy with my friends.
But, don’t get things twisted. My life is not perfect at all. Those amazing girls God has blessed me with sometimes cut up and make me want to run away from home. There are days when I ask my husband what planet he was raised on. And, my job??? Let’s not even go there. I’m just glad Jesus is a keeper. (LOL)
My point is, there are moments in everyone’s life where they feel like the weight of the world is on their shoulder and everyone is against them. I do not care how happy someone looks on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. It doesn’t matter how well groomed and polished they look in their photos. Children or no children. Married or not married. Young or old. Fat or skinny. We are all faced with challenges that seem too hard to bare. The grass is not greener on the other side! Everyone has issues and face trials that can take them out.
Here is a smidgen of my truth. There was a season in my marriage where we were struggling financially. I mean, we were at the bottom of the barrel. The bank account was empty, we were behind on the mortgage payments, and we were looking at each other as though we were each other’s enemy. There was no peace in our home and we had no answers on how to fix the mess we created. Yes, I said we created. We made decisions that ended up with us falling into a pit. It wasn’t fun and it felt like we had come to the end of a long and stressful road.
But here is the thing. Just because we got caught up in our own mess, doesn’t mean we have to stay there and sulk. It doesn’t matter what your situation is, you determine if you will rise up or sink a little deeper. You can wallow in self-pity, doubt, fear, and frustration. Or, you can take a more promised route. Psalm 121:1-8 gives us the best set of instructions and comfort during times of distress.
“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh form the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer they foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
I take this scripture with me to the bank every time. HIs word remains true! It doesn’t matter what you are going through. God is a keeper, he knows exactly what you are going through and he has a plan for you.
Here are a couple of the lessons I learned during our rough patch.
Psalm 16:8 says “I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” In order for you to get to the solution, you have to first make a decision to keep your eyes on him. Not your problem. It is so easy to focus on everything that is going wrong. Shift gears and focus on God.
No one picked you up and placed you into your situation. Denial is a dark and horrible place to live in. Face the facts. You made decisions that walked you into the situation you are in. Pointing fingers at others is never the answer. Yes, it is the easiest route to take. Blame others. But, it is never the mature route to take. Plus, you will never grow if that is your ammunition.
Psalm 107:1 “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!” We serve an awesome God! He stands by his word even when we are not doing what we are supposed to do. Even though times may seem rough, it isn’t all bad.
When John and I went through our rough patch, it was hard, but, we could see the hand of God moving on our behalf. When we choose to focus and look for God, we clearly saw Him. We were never homeless. Our refrigerator and pantry were well stocked with food. Our children were always safe. Let’s be real, we didn’t kill each other. (LOL) The list goes on and on. Even in the midst of one of our storms God remained faithful to his promises. But, it was up to us to see His hand.
What kills me are those people that tell it ALL. Every single post or tweet is about how they are suffering. Instagram and Snap all highlight their dark season. Then they get mad when everyone is in their business and attacking them.
Psalm 27:5 “For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; in the secret places of His tabernacle shall He hide me; He shall set me upon a rock.” Sit down somewhere and stay hidden. Allow God to do the work needed to get you through this season and stop jumping “into” the fire. God is not trying to expose your sin and shame. That’s the awesome God that we serve. Even though we created negative situations and are reaping the consequences of it, God doesn’t broadcast it to the world. When we go to him, he is a loving God that will cover us while he works on us.
Heavenly Father, I pray for my sister that is reading this prayer right now. Help her to focus on you. Remove the distractions that are clouding her vision. Allow her to walk in the understanding of who she is in you. Take away any desire to compare herself, her life or her current situation to others. What you have for her is so much better than what she is comparing her life to. May she find peace and joy in the season you currently have her in.
Sincerely your daughter,
